Geochemical comparison between Archaean and Proterozoic orthogneisses from the Nagssugtoqidian orogen, West Greenland

چکیده
In the Palaeoproterozoic Nagssugtoqidian orogen of West Greenland reworked Archaean and juvenile Proterozoic orthogneisses occur side by side and are difficult to differentiate in the field. Archaean gneisses have tonalitic to trondhjemitic compositions with relatively low Al2O3 and Sr, and may have been derived from magmas formed by melting of basaltic or amphibolitic rocks at moderate pressures. The Proterozoic rocks are on average more mafic, and it is likely that they crystallised from mantle-derived magmas. Felsic varieties of the Proterozoic igneous suite probably formed from the original magma by fractional crystallisation, in which hornblende played an important role, and at SiO2 \ 65% Archaean and Proterozoic rocks have very similar major and trace element compositions (including REE), illustrating that different modes of origin may lead to very similar results. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Extreme Nd-isotope heterogeneity in the early Archaean - fact or fiction? Case histories from northern Canada and West Greenland
Sm-Nd data on rock suites from early Archaean provinces in northern Canada and West Greenland clearly demonstrate that tectonothermal (i.e. igneous, metamorphic, tectonic) processes which affected the rocks long after their formation produced open-system behaviour leading to effective resetting of the Sm-Nd system accompanied by complete, or near-complete, Nd-isotope homogenisation. This means ...

[1] A series of steps in the lithospheric thickness of eastern Australia are revealed by the latest seismic surface wave tomographic model and calculations of the horizontal gradient of shear wave speed. The new images incorporate data from the recent Tasmal experiment, improving resolution in continental Australia. Through comparisons with surface geology and geochemical studies, it is possibl...
متن کاملLong-term memory of subduction processes in the lithospheric mantle: evidence from the geochemistry of basic dykes in the Gardar Province of South Greenland
The rift-related magmas of the Proterozoic Gardar Igneous Province were emplaced across the contact between the South Greenland Archaean craton and the Palaeoproterozoic Ketilidian mobile belt. It has been suggested that the geochemistry of Gardar intrusive rocks in the two areas varies across the craton margin and that this reflects a lithospheric control. However, comparison of the geochemica...
متن کاملNew U-Pb SHRIMP zircon ages for pre-variscan orthogneisses from Portugal and their bearing on the evolution of the Ossa-Morena tectonic zone.
New SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages for the Portalegre and Alcáçovas orthogneisses document a complex pre- Variscan history for the Iberian basement in Portugal. The available geochemical and geochronological data for the Alcáçovas orthogneiss (ca. 540 Ma) tend to favor its involvement in a Cadomian orogenic event. This is consistent with the development of an active continental margin setting at the e...
متن کاملHigh-precision Nd/Nd measurements in terrestrial rocks: Constraints on the early differentiation of the Earth s mantle
We present new ultra-high precision Nd/Nd measurements of early Archaean rocks using the new generation thermal ionization mass spectrometer Triton. Repeated measurements of the Ames Nd standard demonstrate that the Nd/Nd ratio can be determined with external precision of 2 ppm (2r), allowing confident resolution of anomalies as small as 5 ppm. A major analytical improvement lies in the elimina...
